Firefighters rushed to an eight-story Perdido Key condominium complex Thursday after black smoke began billowing from its upper floors.

Escambia County Fire Rescue crews were dispatched at 1:48 p.m. Thursday to Perdido Skye at 13785 Perdido Key Drive and observed “black smoke on the seventh floor,” according to Escambia County spokeswoman Laura Coale.

Firefighters extinguished the flames by 2:09 p.m. and no one was injured, Coale added.

Escambia County Fire Rescue crews were dispatched Thursday to the Perdido Skye condominium complex, where they put out a fire after seeing smoke on the seventh floor.

The building was empty of tenants because of ongoing remediation and repairs of storm damages caused by Hurricane Sally.

After an initial investigation, Coale said authorities believe the fire began on the building's fifth floor because of a faulty air conditioning unit.

Twelve firefighting units including fire engines, fire ladder trucks and fire department tower trucks responded to the burning structure. The huge responsive is typical in a multi-unit fire, Coale said.
